Bad Breath in Dogs- What Causes It?

November 25, 2009 by admin

A dog uses his mouth for many things. Among these would be to eat, to communicate with us and other animals, to gnaw, crush, and grind things. He also uses it to carry food and objects from one place to another. Needless to say, the mouth has a very significant function in your dog’s life.

When you notice that your dog has bad breath, it could be a sign of a health problem that needs to be addressed right away.

Periodontal Disease

This is a condition brought about mostly by the accumulation of tartar in the mouth. It is a common disease that in fact, about 50-80% of dogs has it. Food particles left in the mouth after a meal will eventually decompose. As a result, bacteria will grow in numbers forming plaque and tartar.

When this happens, tartar will push the gums farther from the teeth, causing them to loosen as time passes by. Loosened teeth can expose root sockets, thereby infecting it. Infection then goes to the bloodstream, and then on to the liver, kidney, and eventually, the heart.

Signs of Periodontal Disease

The following are tell-tale signs of the disease:

1. Change in eating habits.

2. Pawing (at the mouth)

3. Excessive drooling

4. Tenderness in the mouth

5. Oral bleeding

6. Inflammation and swelling (face, particularly around the eyes)

7. Nasal discharge

8. Sneezing

9. Bad breath

Of all the common symptoms, the most obvious would be bad breath.

Treatment

Once you suspect your dog has periodontal disease, take him to the vet right away. He can clean your dog’s mouth and prescribe medication, possibly antibiotics.

Prevention

Food has something to do with it. Studies show that a diet consisting mostly of canned meals (soft food) is never a good idea. Experts agree that dry food has a lowered risk, in terms of getting this disease.

Another way to prevent periodontal disease is to have dental checkups once a year. You can also give your dog herbal supplements, of which Echinacea is the most recommended. This can be in the form of mouthwash or tea.

Brushing! Just like us, we can keep our dog’s mouth clean and healthy with regular brushing.

You have a role to play in ensuring your dog is in the best of health. Do not wait until such time when he is already suffering from problems in his liver, kidney, and heart. Keep his mouth and body healthy.

How To Get A Dog To Stop Chewing – Stop The Destruction Fast!

WHY DO DOGS AND PUPPIES CHEW?

Hello, my name is Ozzy and I’ve just had my first birthday. I used to chew my mum’s carpet and there’s still a big hole in the corner of our dining room, oops! We chew because when we’re puppies aged between 14-28 weeks old, we’re teething and by chewing things, it helps to soothe our gums and loosen them around our teeth. This allows our ‘baby teeth’ to fall out so that our ‘big teeth’ came come through. It also strengthens our teeth and gums.

Once we’re around six months old, and possibly for the next 18 months, we want to explore! Babies use their hands to explore, dogs and puppies use their mouths! We want to know what everything tastes like. Dogs have been doing this since the beginning of time, it’s in our nature to chew! Destructive chewing can be a problem though so you need to figure out how to stop it fast!

Here’s the clever bit: When we chew, it causes a chemical release of endorphins which calms us down. Chewing helps relieve stress and anxiety. It makes us feel better, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re stressed or anxious if we chew.

HOW DO I PUT A STOP TO DESTRUCTIVE CHEWING?

When it comes to chewing, it makes no difference to us if it’s an expensive sofa or a stick that we’ve picked up from the garden. We have no sense of value, we’re dogs for goodness sake! We need you to teach us what’s ours and what’s yours. We need you to give us things that we’re allowed to chew. If we’ve nothing to chew that’s ours, we’ll just go for the first thing we can lay our teeth on (your sofa, table leg etc). Help us to stop chewing your furniture, let us know what we can chew! If you give us an old shoe to chew, we’re going to think that we have permission to chew all shoes!

The best thing that you can do is give us 3 or 4 toys (all different shapes and textures) to play with. Kongs are great, every dog should have one! They’re rubber toys that you can fill with treats (marmite, cheese, biscuits, meat etc) and they give us hours of fun trying to chew all the tasty treats! Make sure you get one suitable for puppies first though. Nicer than a leather sofa any day! Other great things to chew are rawhide bones and rope tugs.

To stop us from chewing your furniture, spray a deterrent on it, like bitter apple spray, yuck!! If something has that on it, you can guarantee that us dogs will be stopping chewing that!

REWARD US FOR BEING GOOD!

If you see us chewing one of our toys, and not your dining room chair, then praise us. It helps us to learn! Don’t do it too much though, if we’re having a good chewing session we don’t really want to be interrupted. If you do catch us chewing something that we shouldn’t, a firm ‘NO’ will do the trick. Make sure that you then give us something that we can chew so we can stop chewing your furniture!

It’s important to praise us when we’re being good and correct us when we’re being bad.

So there’s a few tips on how you can go about stopping our destructive behaviour!

Dogs are a man’s best friend but training them can be hard work! When I first got my dog, I was exhausted. I didn’t have a clue how to train him until I got some help.

Dog Ear Infections and Hypothyroidism

November 24, 2009 by admin

Under normal circumstances, your dog’s ears shouldn’t smell bad at all. They shouldn’t be red, or itchy, or have a discharge. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, his ears need attention.

Up Close And Personal

One of the most enjoyable aspects of owning a dog is always having something to cuddle. It’s not so nice cuddling them when their ears are stinky.

Foul smelling ears are an indication that something isn’t quite right in the ear canals. When you bathe or groom your dog, it’s important that you get close to his ears and have a sniff. Identifying problems early will allow you to start treating the ears straight away, and have him feeling more comfortable very quickly.

Ear mites can cause a bad smell in the ears, as well as an obvious build up of dark crumbly material. They also make the ears extremely itchy, and are easily spread from one dog to another. If they’re not treated, a secondary infection can develop, which hurts and can be more difficult to resolve. You can easily treat ear mites by using an insecticidal ear drop from your veterinarian.

Ears that don’t dry out very well are a perfect environment for bacterial growth and infection, and the resultant bad smell. Examples are dogs with floppy ears which don’t allow air circulation, and even dogs who swim frequently. These dogs benefit from using a product that dries up excess moisture in the ear canal.

The third main cause of smelly ears is skin allergies. Irritation and inflammation of the skin due to allergies also extends to the ear canal. Your dog will dig and scratch at his ear with his foot, desperately trying to relieve the itch. These allergies lead to secondary infection with bacteria and fungi, which is also itchy, painful, and smelly. Smelly ears are often related to an allergy to food, or to dusts and pollens in the environment.

Get Some Fresh Air Into Those Ears

You can tackle your dog’s stinky ears by treating the cause of the smell, which is usually an     infection. To do this, you’ll need to take your dog to your vet for an ear exam. She’ll take a sample of his ear discharge and examine it to identify the bacteria that’s causing the problem. She’ll then clean the ears and prescribe an appropriate antibiotic, and also some pain relief.

You’ll still need to deal with the primary problem. If your dog is a water baby, then make sure you clean and dry his ears after he swims. If the infection was caused by ear mites, your vet will advise you on what to use to kill them. If he has allergies, it’s a good idea to start a food trial to rule out any food sensitivity. Your vet may prescribe anti-itch medication such as Benadryl to stop him scratching and traumatizing his ears, and encouraging further infection.

Ear Clear is a useful tool to have in your arsenal for treating ear infections. It’s an all natural product, containing antimicrobial herbs and tea tree oil, and will help to reduce any infection and swelling in your dog’s ear canal. Extra virgin olive oil will soothe the ear canal, and help break up any wax accumulation. Finally, lavender oil is anti-bacterial and anti-itch, and makes your dog’s ears smell a lot more pleasant.

A bad smell means that something is wrong in the ears, and that something usually hurts. Treating the cause of the smell will not only have you snuggling up to your dog again, but will have him feeling more comfortable. That’s a win-win situation for both of you.  http://www.happytailsspa.com/

Reason Why You are Better Off with a Dog Training DVD

November 23, 2009 by admin

There are a couple of reasons why it would be better for pet owners to just buy a dog training DVD rather than to enroll their pets to an expensive training school. The first reason is the most obvious one: money. Obviously, it is a lot cheaper to just purchase a DVD and do the training at home than to pay for training fees. These dog trainers have gone through a lot of training themselves so it is just natural for them to ask for really high fees. While you would still have to buy dog training DVD from dog training experts, there will be a lot of difference between the fees that you would have to pay.

Another reason why you would be better of buying a dog training DVD is the assurance that your pet will only follow you and the other people at home. In training schools, what they use is the universal dog language; hence, as long as other people can copy their methods in the schools, they would be able to control your dog. This is a threat to your safety as this means that other people can use your dog against you.

Your pet should be your best friend and protector and not the other way around. By getting a dog training DVD, you can make sure that you do not pay much money and the training is personalized. Training your dog would require just a few minutes of your time so it would not be such a bother on your part.
